Afterword
This story was inspired by the story of the trawler ‘Thunder’, which was pursued by the ‘Sea Shepherd’, a boat belonging to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, for 10,260 nautical miles from the Antarctic to the Atlantic, off the coast of Africa and then sunk by its captain. They had been fishing a protected species in the Southern Ocean. The Sea Shepherd crew rescued the captain and crew of the ‘Thunder’ and did nothing illegal. My character is less scrupulous.
As far as I know Jacques Cousteau designed and built the first yellow submarine. The one shown on the cover – the flying saucer model – was his second. I had a photo of it on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager. Maybe either John Lennon or Paul McCartney did too and that inspired them to write the song.
